BACKGROUND OF THE ORGANIZATION
PROTTASHA FOUNDATION is a non-government, non-political, non-religious and non-profitable multidimensional development service oriented local level voluntary organization. “PROTTASHA FOUNDATION” the English version of the Bengali words is organization for mitigate of the expectation against problems of human being and emancipation of the people i.e. the people are free from poverty, disparity and exploitation.
It is working in north-west of Bangladesh since January 1, 1999 for sustainable socio-economic development of the poor and marginal inhabitants of Borommprotto Padma, Jamuna, river basin areas under Mymensingh, Sherpur, Netrokona,Jamalpdur and Dhaka district. The tornado, hailstorm, flood, arsenic contamination in water, river bank erosion and drought are the common hazards of the areas. At least 80% families are directly or indirectly depended on traditional agriculture systems, but the agro-based modern technologies are very difficulties to apply in these char areas as these areas are adjacent Borendro areas. The people can’t grow crops round the year and they can’t depend on agriculture production. Locally they don’t have sufficient job opportunities, becoming un-employed for more than 08 months of the year. As a result the people are diverting their professions from farming to off farming activities like rickshaw/van pulling, selling tea in town and more than 50% people have to go out for searching of alternative jobs seasonally i.e. seasonal migration is increasing as a high rate, which are really alarming and threatening for other moveable diseases like HIV/AIDs. The numbers of extreme poor families are more than 30%, most of them are not considered to involve in development activities, especially for women, children and person with disability. The conditions of the women are very pitiable. They are seriously deprived as the victims of natural disaster and as well traditional male leading social management. Unequal behavior & attitude among men and women in family & community are exists. People of the areas are remaining un-aware & illiteracy, facing famine situation, becoming poorest of the poor & ultra poor and finally the social & national liability is increasing gradually. Basic service like Education, Health & nutrition, water and sanitation, Agriculture, Banks, communication and other supports are not providing adequately. Ultimately they are really deprived from holistic development.
Considering the said painful situation PROTTASHA FOUNDATION was established in January 1999 for sustainable socio-economic development of the poor and marginal people. This organization started its activities by the inspiration of some Doctor for the social economic development of the distressed and disadvantages people of the society. Though the organization started its activities in 1999 but its necessity felt in the considering the social environment. In the inception 10 nos. volunteer took the development training by the help of local generous people and subscriptions of the committee members. They started their work among the distressed and landless woman to build up their self-confidence and awareness and to establish their fundamental rights. The organization started to gather the distressed people by forming group through its group development plan. After that the organization took the following activities implementing multi-dimensional programs very intensively with the technical and financial support of National & International donor agencies Non-formal education program, Encourage for savings. Create opportunity to use the wealth or resources. Income generating program to use the local resources and savings of the group members. In this way the organization gradually extended its activities covering the areas of Mymensingh,Sherpur,Netrokona ,Kishorgong Natore, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Bogra, Panchgor, Kustia, Sirajgonj and Costral areas in Greater Barisal, and Greater Chattagram district.
